Continuous improvement of prenatal examinations and expansion of obstetric care

As a Level 1 Perinatal Center with specialized doctors, midwives, and nurses, Heidelberg University Hospital offers all the possibilities of modern medicine. “At our hospital, an interdisciplinary team of experts is on call around the clock to provide mothers and babies with the best possible care using the combined expertise of modern medicine,” says Prof. Dr. Oliver Zivanovic, Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Heidelberg University Hospital.
In order to further improve prenatal examinations, Prof. Dr. Cahit Birdir, the new Director of Obstetrics and Prenatal Medicine, and his team recently put a state-of-the-art AI-assisted ultrasound device into operation that can show even the finest vascular structures in three dimensions and in motion. “For precise and comprehensive diagnostics, we rely on powerful devices, among other things, so that we can examine the fetus for possible diseases and malformations,” says Professor Birdir.
In some cases of malformation, the foetus can be treated even before birth. Among other things, the medical team at the Center for Fetal Therapy at Heidelberg University Hospital performs surgery on the womb for conditions such as spina bifida aperta (open spine) or myelomeningocele.
