Development of an international beacon of university medicine
The university hospitals in Heidelberg and the neighboring city of Mannheim, together with the medical faculties of Heidelberg University, have been synonymous with excellent patient care, research, and teaching for many years. Since January 2026, the hospitals have also been organizationally linked in order to further strengthen these areas together.
“Our goal is to establish a center of international excellence in medicine. Together with university and non-university research institutions in Heidelberg and Mannheim, we are creating a globally unique innovation hub for medicine and life sciences,” says the head of the alliance, Professor Hanns-Peter Knaebel.
In total, the two hospitals have almost 4,000 beds and are capable of treating about 130,000 inpatients and nearly 1.5 million outpatients annually.
