Heidelberg Diabetes Center Certification Renewed

The renewed certification confirms the excellent care of diabetes and recognizes the extensive range of treatment options. Patients benefit directly from clinical study results.
The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Heidelberg University Hospital has again been recognized by the German Diabetes Society (DDG) as a "Certified Diabetes Center DDG." This professional society certificate confirms, among other things, the qualifications of employees, the quality of laboratory services, the successful education of patients, the cooperation of different specialties and the experience in treating patients with Diabetes Types 1 (congenital) and 2 (acquired).
One Disease - Many Experts
Late damage from diabetes includes kidney failure, decreased wound healing or blindness. Thus, at Heidelberg Department of Endocrinology there are not only diabetes specialists, assistants and counselors but also podiatrists and wound healing assistants. "The deciding factor for certification is also the experience of our employees. Each year, some 1,700 outpatients and 1,300 inpatients are treated," says Professor Dr. Peter P. Nawroth, Medical Director of the Department. In addition, connectivity with various Departments and facilities of the University Hospital, such as the Heidelberg Kidney Center and the Department of Ophthalmology provides wide care coverage, as confirmed by the renewed DDG certification.

Diabetic Late Effects in Focus of Research Projects
Prof. Nawroth is also the spokesman of a special research section (SFB) of the German Research Society (DFG), which studies the emergence of late complications in diabetes. "Certainly we can treat late complications well in the hospital, but we still know too little about how they occur," explains Nawroth. In addition to basic research, the Department also runs a research clinic in which clinical studies are performed. "In this way we can directly incorporate new research findings into treatment," explains the doctor and researcher.
