Publications of nine "highly cited researchers" of Heidelberg University were among the world's most cited, according to an international evaluation. Thus, Heidelberg University is excellently positioned and the most successful University in Germany.

Heidelberg University is now represented by nine scientists on a currently published list of "highly cited researchers." This international assessment identifies researchers whose publications have been most frequently cited in the natural sciences, social sciences, or medicine worldwide.

One of the most cited researchers in his field worldwide is Prof. Dr. Ralf Bartenschlager (microbiology), whose name has reached the list now for the fifth consecutive time. Prof. Dr. A. Stephen K. Hashmi (chemistry), Prof. Dr. Hugo A. Katus (medicine), Prof. Dr. Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg (neuro and behavioral sciences), and Prof. Dr. Volker Springel (astronomy) have been listed for the fourth time in succession. Prof. Dr. Springel is a professor at Ruperto Carola and works at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical studies. Prof. Dr. Andreas von Deimling (neuro and behavioral sciences) is on the list for the third time. As they were last year, Prof. Dr. Marcella Rietschel (psychiatry / psychology) and Prof. Dr. Karin Schumacher (developmental biology) are also among the scientists with the most citations. A new addition to the "highly cited researchers" list is Prof. Dr. Werner Hacke (neuro and behavioral sciences).

Citation frequency is assessed according to how often a publication is cited in the publications of colleagues. It is thus regarded as an important indicator for the scientific impact of a publication. For the current list of "highly cited researchers," published by Clarivate Analytics, publications from the years 2005 to 2015 were assessed. Publications are considered "highly cited" if they are among the top 1 percent of the most cited publications in the respective discipline and in the respective year of publication.
