Foot Surgery and Foot Deformities

Department of Orthopaedics at Heidelberg University Hospital

Our expert team in the Pediatric Orthopaedics and Foot Surgery Division  is very experienced in treating all types of disorders of the foot and ankle. In addition to conservative therapies, we offer a wide range of surgical procedures.

One of our areas of specialization is the treatment of complex foot deformities, neurogenic and congenital conditions as well as recurrences after prior operations. We offer the full range of well-established surgical procedures on an inpatient basis or, depending on the extent of the surgery, on an outpatient basis. The hospital’s own orthopedic workshop provides post-operative aids and devices as part of our follow-up treatment, so that we can guarantee seamless care.

Medical Areas of Expertise

Gait analysis

Prior to surgery we perform a precise gait analysis in our gait laboratory to obtain important information about the individual movement processes in your foot.

Key data

Our physicians, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists, along with our specially trained nursing staff, care for approximately 500 patients with foot conditions annually in our 24-bed unit. The average length of stay is seven days.

Treatment

Measures range from soft-tissue surgery, tendon transfers through to complex reconstructions of the bones and soft tissues of the foot. The scope of the necessary operations is based on the clinical and radiologic findings and thoroughly discussed with the patient. Follow-up care also plays an important role and should be discussed prior to the planned surgical intervention.

As part of a university medical center, our principal mission is to treat complex conditions and deformities that sometimes require very elaborate reconstructive solutions. As a maximum care hospital, we offer you optimal care in cooperation with other university facilities with regard to any pre-existing conditions.

The waiting period for appointments and operations is currently several months. We thank you for your understanding.
