We treat approximately 5,500 inpatients and 17,000 outpatients each year in our Department of Gastroenterology (diseases of the digestive tract) and Hepatology (liver diseases). The department occupies a top position in Germany in clinical performance and efficiency.
We have more than 60 beds in intensive, intermediate, and regular care units so that we can provide optimal care for our patients, who stay in the hospital for an average of six days. The specialized gastroenterological intensive care unit is a unique feature of our department. Here our cancer patients are competently cared for by our specially trained nursing staff and our physicians following complex surgical and endoscopic procedures.
For more than 40 years, we have taken an interdisciplinary approach to treating cancer patients at Heidelberg University Hospital. Treatment plans are developed by gastroenterologists in close cooperation with experts from the Departments of Surgery and Radiology. Gastroenterological tumors are treated in our department on an inpatient or outpatient basis, or at the oncology day clinic in cooperation with the National Center for Tumor Diseases.
We have a wide spectrum of endoscopic examination methods available in order to provide a quick and accurate diagnosis and also, where possible, to administer therapy, including a complete range of modern diagnostic measures such as chromoendoscopy, mucosectomy, endosonography, enteroscopy, and many others.
Our intensive research program allows us to offer many of our patients treatment within the framework of national and international clinical studies, in addition to the standard therapy.
We specialize in the treatment of
cancer of the esophagus,
stomach cancer,
bowel cancer,
liver cancer,
and cancer of the pancreas.
We wish you a pleasant stay and a speedy recovery!
Sincerely,
Prof. Wolfgang Stremmel
